William Franklin Graham Jr.
November 7, 1918 – February 21, 2018
Billy was an American evangelist, civil rights advocate, and ordained Southern Baptist minister, passed away on February 21, 2018, at 99. His renowned broadcasts and world tours featuring live sermons gained widespread recognition in the mid-to-late 20th century. Over six decades, Graham solidified his status as a prominent figure in the evangelical Christian community.
Biographer Billy Graham, a prominent Christian leader of the 20th century, noted Graham’s remarkable ability to fill stadiums worldwide with his live sermons. Beginning in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Graham’s charismatic preaching and commitment to racial integration symbolized hope and unity during a time of intense racial strife in the United States. He passionately advocated for racial integration in his revivals and crusades, even inviting Martin Luther King Jr. to jointly preach in New York City in 1957.
Beyond his religious teachings, Billy Graham’s influence extended beyond the church, shaping diverse worldviews. He skillfully connected the Bible to contemporary secular viewpoints, inspiring many to find a meaningful relationship between the two. Graham addressed live audiences of at least 210 million people in over 185 countries and territories.
Graham’s personal connections with US presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon, further underscored his influence. Billy Graham, a lifelong friend of televangelist Robert Schuller, encouraged Schuller to launch his own television ministry. Graham’s evangelism was well-received by mainline Protestant denominations, who appreciated his efforts to encourage converts to remain within or return to their churches. Despite initial reservations towards Catholicism, Graham eventually developed amicable relationships with many American Catholic Church figures and became a vocal advocate for Catholic-Protestant unity.
Graham operated various media and publishing outlets. His Billy Graham Crusades invited over 3.2 million people to accept Jesus Christ as their savior. His lifetime audience, encompassing radio and television broadcasts, is believed to have surpassed billions of people. As a result of his crusades, Graham preached the gospel to more people than anyone in the history of Christianity.
Graham consistently ranked high on Gallup’s list of most admired men and women, achieving a record-breaking 61 accolades. By the mid-1960s, Grant Wacker dubbed him the “Great Legitimator,” noting his influence on presidents, wars, racial prejudice, decency, indecency, and civic events.
